How do I cite an artwork from an exhibition?
Note: This post relates to content in the eighth edition of the MLA Handbook. For up-to-date guidance, see the ninth edition of the MLA Handbook.
To cite an artwork from an exhibition, follow the MLA format template. Provide the name of the artist as the author and the title of the work. List the exhibition’s name as the title of the container, followed by the exhibition’s opening and closing dates. Then specify the place where the exhibition was held, including the city, as the location:
Turner, Joseph Mallord William. Dieppe: The Port from the Quai Henri IV. Turner’s Modern and Ancient Ports: Passages through Time, 23 Feb. 2017- 14 May 2017, Frick Collection, New York.
