To cite a movie score, follow the MLA format template. Begin your entry with the name of the score’s composer. Film scores do not usually have formal titles, so you will most likely need to include a description of the score in the Title of Source element. Finish with the year of the movie’s release:

Göransson, Ludwig. Original score for Sinners. 2025.

If you are discussing the score in the context of your discussion of the movie, you may wish to cite the movie as your source and include the composer of the score in the Contributor element:

Sinners. Directed by Ryan Coogler, original score by Ludwig Göransson, Proximity Media / Warner Bros. Pictures, 2025.

If you are citing an audio recording of a movie score, follow the guidance in appendix 2 of the MLA Handbook for citing musical recordings. Include the name of the album in the Title of Source element and the name of the record label that released the album in the Publisher element:

Göransson, Ludwig. Sinners (Original Motion Picture Score). Sony Classical, 2025.

Note that a movie score is different from a movie soundtrack, which often includes existing songs by other artists in addition to music composed specifically for the film. If you want to cite a movie soundtrack that features many different artists, you can begin your entry with the title of the soundtrack album:

Sinners (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack). Sony Masterworks, 2025.
